The Mime Company

Biography:

The Mime Company is a group of theater professionals and educators dedicated to the creation and performance of original work in the art of mime. Founded at Northwestern University in 1972, the company maintains a professional arm, touring and conducting educational outreach, in addition to its activities on the Northwestern campus, which include concert performances of new professional and student work, and undergraduate courses in mime. The Mime Company is one of the country's few classical mime ensembles training new actors in this foundational theater form, consistently producing new work for the stage, and designing innovative educational programs that use the art of mime to address mainstream educational and arts goals.

Artistic Statement:

Our approach to engaging school and community sites is rooted in the power of the art of mime to transcend the limits of language, age and culture, bringing diverse communities together in a celebration of our universal human experiences. Students learn to express themselves in this non-verbal art form through games, physical warm-ups, and group storytelling activities. These skills become the basis for creating their own personal stories in mime which can be shared with the school or community at large. Since 2001, we have conducted more than thirty educational residencies for all age levels, including residencies focusing on the goals of community building, early elementary language arts and writing, and bilingual education.
