Sones de México Ensemble

Biography: 

The group is formed by Music Director Víctor Pichardo (award-winning composer and educator with a twenty-five-year career in Mexican music), ethnomusicologist Juan Díes (also producer of the ensemble's recordings), dancer and musician Lorena Iñiguez (a choreographer, dance teacher, and principal dancer with the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago), Juan Rivera (master Mexican fiddler with ample experience as a soloist and as a mariachi musician), Zacbe Pichardo (percussionist and harpist), and Javier Saume (drummer and percussionist). Besides the ensemble members, the group often collaborates with other quality artists in the community.

Artistic Statement: 

Sones de México Ensemble is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit arts organization founded in Chicago in 1994 by a group of accomplished Mexican musicians and educators. The group specializes in son, a rich and lively Mexican music tradition, and its many regional styles, each of them rich with its own repertoire, rhythms, instruments, and dance styles. The ensemble performs concerts and educational services for children and adults of all backgrounds throughout the United States. The group has also conducted sessions with educators on creative curriculum development, repertoire for the classroom, and other topics. Latino children, especially Mexican children, are the fastest growing population in the United States and also one of the most underserved. Sones de México responds to this need with culturally based programs that inspire through excellence and professionalism.
