Artist / Program Description:
¡Salsation! is Chicago’s first ensemble theatre company devoted to creating comedy with a Latin flavor. They write their own sketch comedy scripts and improvise from true-life stories, frequently focusing on the issues of living with Latino heritage in American society. The ¡Salsation! ensemble was founded in 1998 by Latino actors from Chicago’s improv comedy community, studying the craft at ImprovOlympic and Second City. In 2002, they incorporated as a not-for-profit. Most performers are Chicagoland natives, with families from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic.
Sketch Comedy Shows are customized shows featuring comedic sketches and monologues from their most recent show and from past hits such as Touched by an Anglo and My Big Fat Quinceañera. The archival selections can be tailored to emphasize a presenter’s preferred topic, such as education, family, community, media or overcoming stereotypes. (twenty to eighty minutes, with optional Q&A or improv set)
Improvisational Shows are unscripted, using audience suggestions to inspire scenes, stories, and mini-plays. Performances are primarily in English and readily understood Spanglish, but custom events can be prepared en Español.
