Artist / Program Description
The McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage supports a comprehensive regional arts program of presented events, art exhibits, and performances of five resident professional companies, including the Arts Center Jazz Ensemble. Established in 1986 as a seventeen-piece professional big band, the Arts Center Jazz Ensemble's repertoire is diverse and ambitious, reflecting both the past resilience and the present ingenuity of the big band idiom.
The Artie Shaw/Benny Goodman Songbook features clarinetist Brian Patti and the Arts Center Jazz Ensemble saluting two of the swing era’s most popular voices. An optional presentation with audio interview footage of Artie Shaw with jazz radio host Denny Farrell, seamlessly blends Shaw’s memories of his hits, followed by "Begin the Beguine," "Stardust," and other pieces, culminating in his seldom-heard "Concerto for Clarinet." "Stompin’ at the Savoy" and "Goodbye," as well as Mary Lou Williams’ "Roll ‘Em" and Fletcher Henderson’s arrangement of "King Porter Stomp," are featured in the set dedicated to Chicago native Benny Goodman’s musical legacy.
