Led by Music Director Allen Tinkham and consisting of the most advanced high school musicians from the Chicago area, the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO) is internationally recognized as one of the premier youth orchestras in the United States. The organization directly serves more than 350 gifted musicians (ages seven to eighteen) through four core orchestras and a chamber music program, over 5,000 Chicago Public School students through its Music Pathways program, and over 40,000 audience members each season.
The orchestra performs annually at Symphony Center’s Orchestra Hall, and participates in educational programs and collaborations with other cultural arts organizations including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Sinfonietta, and the Ravinia Festival.
The Encore Chamber Orchestra is made up of a select group of exceptionally gifted CYSO students and provides advanced training and distinguished performance opportunities. Recently, Encore has performed on Public Radio International’s From the Top and at the grand reopening of the Chicago History Museum, and has also completed an internationally heralded European tour.
