Artist / Program Description

Cuerdas Clasicas (CC) plays and sings “estudiantina” (student group) style of music that has its roots in Spain. University students entertained themselves by playing and singing popular and classical music, at times strolling through the town, entertaining at parties, or serenading a lady under her window. Going back to the 13th century, they were known as “Tunas”: groups of poor students that played in taverns to earn money or a dish of soup. They were also called Sopistas (“those who eat soup"). CC has performed throughout the United States and Mexico. They have appeared on the Chicago Emmy Awards show and on other television variety shows, and once did a command performance for Mexican President Vicente Fox.
