Artist / Program Description:
Author of such classics as Martin, My Father and Neon Lady's Birthday (a poem commissioned by the city of Chicago for the sesquicentennial), David Hernandez has been writing and reciting poetry for over thirty years. Hernandez's extroverted narrative style engages the audience with a direct emotional appeal. The result is food for thought wrapped in an entertaining package. Hernandez's solo readings have taken him from smoke-filled cafes and nightclubs, to the Governor's mansion, performing in schools, colleges, and special events such as a mayoral inauguration and the Taste of Chicago. Hernandez also performs with his poetry and musical group Street Sounds. David Hernandez's performances and readings both inspire and nurture the audience. His poetry touches social and cultural themes with warmth and humor.
