Artist / Program Description
The Dorians are a Celtic band from Carbondale, IL, offering ballads and dance music from the Irish and Scottish traditions. They were voted “Best Acoustic Band” at the 1997 Southern Illinois Music Awards. The Dorians have performed throughout Illinois and Missouri at festivals, community colleges, academic conferences, and arts education programs. They are the house band for the nationally syndicated public radio program, Celtic Connections, hosted by the band’s flute/whistle player and singer, Bryan Kelso Crow. The band also includes Mickey Soltys on fiddle and guitar, and Mike Shanahan on guitar and vocals.
A two-hour concert includes foot-tapping jigs, reels, hornpipes, and other dance tunes from the Celtic traditions, as well as traditional love songs, historical songs, and humorous songs from Ireland, Scotland, England, and North America. Special programs are available focusing on either Irish or Scottish music, as well as educational concerts for children of all ages.
