Artist / Program Description
Founded in 1974, the Joel Hall Dancers is noted for its explosive blend of jazz, ballet, modern, and “street” dance techniques. In its extensive history as a Chicago-based professional dance company, the Joel Hall Dancers has achieved an international reputation as a quintessential contemporary American jazz ballet company: urban, sophisticated, and accessible.
Artistic Director Joel Hall is a Chicago legend. He has channeled the exhilarating diversity of his native city into an explosive style. African American spirituality and the rhythm of Chicago's street life combine for a dance experience like nothing else in the world.
Touring programs include full evening-length ballets and mixed repertory programs. Evening-length ballets include: Nuts & Bolts, Joel Hall’s jazzy take on that holiday favorite, The Nutcracker; and The Crossing, a work created by Mr. Hall and four company members celebrating the African-American experience. Shows can tour a shortened one-hour version for school groups. Mixed-repertoire concerts may include works by Joel Hall, Talley Beatty, Richard Arve, Ron De Jesus, Sarita Smith Childs, and Lisa Johnson-Willingham.
Dance is a Language (a program for grades K-8) uses movement, dance, music, and a script during the performance to give a brief history of dance, explain how dance is created, and how everyday movement is often dance-related.
