Artist / Program Description
Widely recognized as one of the world’s premier performance arts institutions, Lyric Opera of Chicago is dedicated to producing grand opera of the highest international standards. As an integral part of its mission, Lyric is committed to nurturing an appreciation of opera, music, and the performing arts through its OPERAREACH youth education and cultural outreach initiatives. Since 1963, with the introduction of the company’s first Student Matinees, Lyric’s community-based outreach programs have enriched the lives of over two million participants, young and old.
Opera in the Neighborhoods (for grades 3-8) brings live opera performances to schools. A popular opera is presented in an abridged English-language format, fully staged with sets and costumes, performed by a specially selected troupe of singers, and produced by The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center. Performances are usually held at high schools with appropriate facilities so that neighborhood elementary school students can easily attend.
Meet the Artist (for grades 3-6) involves a school assembly featuring a professional singer and pianist. The program is designed to inspire children by presenting an introduction to opera and to the variety of career and life-enhancing opportunities in the performing arts.
