Matthew Coley is a solo marimba artist who presents eclectic programs of music focused on embracing and capturing the differences in every listener’s ear. The performances can include a variety of music covering classical transcriptions, contemporary works, jazz and popular selections, and original compositions. Matthew frequently presents educational concerts and master classes in a variety of topics. Many admiring audiences have commented on the dance-like quality Matthew encompasses while performing, as well as his energetic approach to the sounds and capabilities of the marimba.
Matthew Coley received a Masters of Music degree from Northwestern University in 2003, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Texas in 2001. He placed third in the 2005 WAMSO/Minnesota Orchestra Young Artist Competition and won first place in the 2000 Music Teachers National Association Solo Percussion Competition, the 2000 Percussive Arts Society Marimba Concerto Competition, and the 1999 Yamaha Young Performing Artist award. He has performed as a soloist with the Northwestern University and University of North Texas Percussion Ensembles, Texas Christian University Wind Ensemble, and the Loyola University of Chicago Orchestra, in a premiere of a marimba concerto written for him.
