Founded in 1983, Maxwell Street Klezmer Band is one of America’s top klezmer show bands and has performed at Carnegie Hall, with Lyric Opera, at the Old Town School of Folk Music, and festivals in Europe. Their show is engaging and accessible to audiences of all backgrounds and ages.  If one were to choose an emissary of good will from the Jewish community, you couldn't do better than Maxwell Street!

The band offers the following programs, which can be adapted to the venue and audience:

Klez for Kids:

A fifty-minute performance for schools and camps, this show packs in a lively history of klezmer music, describes instruments and rhythm, reinforcing the message that it is vital to preserve and celebrate ones heritage and culture.

Beyond Hava Nagila:  Dance to Klezmer Music

Enjoy a klezmer concert and learn dances of the shtetl and the Middle East with Maxwell Street’s dance leaders.

The Whole Megillah: The Story of Yiddish Theatre:

An entertaining history of Jewish music in Europe and America narrated by Musical Theater Historian Charles Troy, with live music by the band and an entertaining video accompaniment.

Salaam, Shalom, Peace: Interfaith Friendship through Music and Dance

Members of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim music communities present a program of songs and dances they have taught to one another.  From the Middle East to Eastern Europe, the concert educates and inspires.


Instrumental and vocal master classes:

Hands-on instrumental master classes with the musicians teach klezmer style and technique to musicians and singers of all levels.

Community Dance Workshop:

Learn folk dances from Eastern Europe and the Middle East with professional dance instructors and live music by the band.
