Artist / Program Description

Founded in 1983, Maxwell Street Klezmer Band is one of America’s top klezmer show bands and has performed on stages across America and Europe. Their traditional klezmer music, songs from the Yiddish theater, and original klezmer-classical compositions are all offered with energy and humor. If one were to choose an emissary of good will from the Jewish community, you couldn't do better than Maxwell Street!

The band offers the following programs, which can be adapted to the venue and audience:

Jumpin' Klezmer!: A fifty-minute peformance for schools packs in a lively history of klezmer music, participation songs, and a broader view of the importance of heritage and culture, as well as instruments and rhythm.

Dances of a Traditional Eastern European Jewish Wedding:
Taught by America's leading Jewish Dance Master and Chicago resident Steve Weintraub. Accessible to all ages and levels.

Pre-concert warm-up: An entertaining history of klezmer music in Europe and America, punctuated with plentiful recorded examples.

Workshops include:
Instrumental and vocal master classes: Reeds, strings, and voices are the focus of these hands-on classes on technique.

Ensemble class: A group of musicians and vocalists work together and become a klezmer band. Ages ten and up, music reading required.
