Artist / Program Description
Accordionist/vocalist Mazurka Wojciechowska is a dynamic artist and one of Chicago’s leading experts in Slavic folk music. She graduated cum laude from the American Conservatory of Music and has sung with several Chicago area professional groups. Through the Old Town School of Folk Music’s Global Roots program, she brings Slavic music to Chicago’s school children, and she plays Sunday afternoons at Klas Restaurant in Cicero. She has toured in Europe and performs extensively in the Midwest. Wearing colorful, authentic folk dress, she sings all songs in the original languages, providing translation and background information in English.
Programs consist of mixed Slavic music, including songs and dance tunes from Poland, former Czechoslovakia, Lusatia, Ukraine and the Balkans. Some Yiddish and Romanian tunes are also included. Specialized programs are available. A Musical Tour of Poland From a Land of Old Souls presents songs of former Czechoslovakia. Balkan Beat! includes folk music from former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Romania. Beautiful Romania presents the real Romania in folk music and art (with Elizabeth Pod, Display Artist). Stranger in a Strange Land includes songs of immigration.
