Artist / Program Description:
Founded in 1975, Natya Dance Theatre (NDT) is an Emmy Award-winning professional touring company specializing in Bharata Natyam, a form of classical dance theater from India. NDT’s innovative style uses dynamic body movement, rhythmic footwork, hand gestures, and facial expressions to convey meaning and emotion. The NDT repertory includes evening-length, full-company works for six to eight dancers, as well as shorter works for two to four dancers or for a soloist. NDT has collaborated extensively with leading contemporary choreographers and companies, with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, and with exponents of Irish, African, flamenco, and other traditions. NDT founder and artistic director Hema Rajagopalan is the recipient of seven NEA choreography fellowships.

Shakti Chakra (The Energy Cycle): Depicts the cycles of the universe using stories from Indian mythology.

Jataka Tales: Uses animal stories to teach positive values and is especially appropriate for children and youth at risk.

Ahimsa: Toward Nonviolence: A dramatic depiction of humankind’s search for peace in a violent world, for which NDT received the 2003 Chicago Dance Award.

Ritua: The Four Seasons: A tribute to Mother Nature.

NDT can tailor its repertory to venues of different sizes, including educational settings. Other works are available on request.
