Artist / Program Description:
Orquestra de Samba is a collaboration of ten Chicago-area musicians with classical, jazz, and Latin backgrounds that have come together to explore the depth, beauty, and power of Brazilian music. From the driving percussive beat of Samba, to the subtle expressionism of Bossa Nova, to the sophistication of the music of Villa-Lobos, the Orquestra provides audiences of all ages with an unforgettable glimpse into Brazilian culture through in-school concerts, workshops, community events, and concert appearances.

Orquestra de Samba’s highly interactive program invites audience participants to play Brazilian percussion, learn the basics of samba dance, and sing in Portuguese, resulting in a “Carnaval” experience that can be found in cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian musical genres such as Batucada, Olodum, Samba, Choro, Bossa Nova, and classical works have been arranged exclusively for the ensemble’s expansive instrumentation (guitar, cavaquinho, piano, flute, violin, cello, bass, trumpet, trombone, voice, and an array of Brazilian percussion instruments). Educational materials integrated into Illinois state learning standards are available for early and late elementary, middle school, and high school. They provide students with background materials and activities before and after in-school concerts to make the most of an Orquestra de Samba performance.
