Midwest Folklife Festival - August 20-21, 2011

Cultures of the Upper Midwest come alive at this free multi-state festival

 

The 11th annual Midwest Folklife Festival will be held on August 20 - 21, 2011 at Folklore Village in Dodgeville, Wisconsin.  The Illinois Arts Council is a presenting partner in the festival which has been altenately hosted in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin since 2000.  This year, the state of Indiana joins in sending artists to the festival for the first time.

The annual festival is free and open to the public, and offers live music and dance performances, hands-on learning opportunities, master artist demonstrations, craft displays, narrative stage discussions, and fun for all ages.  For information about the 2011 Midwest Folklife Festival, directions to Folklore VIllage, and the schedule of events, please visit the festival website, http://www.midwestfolklifefestival.org.

The Illinois Arts Council partners with Company of Folk, an Illinois not-for-profit organization whose mission is "to research, preserve and present the local and folk culture of the region" to select Illinois artists and performing groups that will be exemplary examples of Illinois' ethnic and folk art traditions.

This year, the family band Los Pichardo, specialists in Son Mexicana and Ricardo Salazar, builder of handmade jaranas - stringed instruments of Mexico, will represent Illinois at the festival.
