Visual Arts Touring Exhibit Packages
Security Requirement Guidelines:

Each Visual Arts Touring Package available through the Artstour Program has a security requirement that potential exhibitors must meet in order to host the exhibition. General guidelines for the three standard levels of security are listed below. Please contact the individual exhibit developer to find out exact requirements.

High Security: required for exhibitions containing original works of art that are highly valuable, sensitive to light or sensitive climatic changes in humidity and temperature

  • Limited access gallery of sufficient area and adequate storage and staging area
  • Trained, professional guards in sufficient number to adequately protect objects and provide crowd control
  • Exhibition locked after hours; alarms or night guards may also be required
  • Locked and/or alarmed cases for small objects; provisions to prevent the public from touching non-enclosed objects
  • Temperature and light controls are required. Light, temperature and humidity must be adjustable to specified levels when required. (Standard levels are 68 to 72 degrees Farenheit, and 45 to 50 percent relative humidity.)
  • Fire protection according to local ordinances--heat and smoke detectors are required
  • Handling of objects by trained and experienced museum professionals

Moderate Security: required for most exhibitions containing original works of art

  • Limited access, gallery-type area
  • Guards or other trained personnel whose sole duty is the supervision of the exhibition
  • Exhibition locked after hours; alarms or night guards may also be required
  • Locked and/or alarmed cases for small objects; provisions to prevent the public from touching non-enclosed objects
  • Temperature and light controls are required. Light, temperature and humidity must be adjustable to specified levels when required. (Standard levels are 68 to 72 degrees Farenheit, and 45 to 50 percent relative humidity.)
  • Fire protection according to local ordinances
  • Handling of objects by trained professionals

Limited Security: the minimum security required for exhibitions

  • Limited-access gallery or display area
  • Responsible supervision of exhibition at all times
  • Exhibition area must be locked and secured during closing hours
  • No temperature or humidity extremes
  • No direct sunlight
  • Fire protection according to local ordinances
  • Careful handling of objects
